Well if you’re brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, it sounds like the only thing that would cause you to not have “fresh” breath would be a tongue scraper. Thousands of bacterial colonies are resting on your tongue, and when you eat food your giving them nutrients to thrive in. Your tongue is warm, moist, and easy to stick to, so it’s the best place for them to be in large quantities. You can purchase a tongue scraper at any convenience store and use it every day for 2 weeks. You’re going to start as far back as possible on the tongue without gagging yourself and make one full stroke down to the tip of the tongue, then rinse the tongue scraper under hot running water, and repeat about 4 – 5 times to reach the whole surface of the tongue. After 2 weeks, you’ll notice a difference in not only how your breath smells, but how food tastes as well.
Personally, I brush, floss, and use a tongue scraper, and ocassionally will use a non-alcohol containing mouthrinse, and I usually always have fresh breath (unless I eat onions or garlic). If you use mouthwash, keep in mind that mouthrinses containing alcohol will dry out your mouth, causing a sour taste in your mouth, and then you feel you have to use the mouthrinse again to get rid of it, thus a continuing cycle. There is no proven reason to have alcohol in mouthwashes/mouthrinses (except listerine, it seems to be one of their ingredients they can’t take out), but corporations have done studies that show people will not buy mouthrinses without alcohol because they can’t feel the “tingling” sensation (I call it burning sensation) and don’t think it works. Honestly, if you use mouthwash, make sure it doesn’t have alcohol in it.
A few last things to note that don’t pertain to your oral cavity include possible gastric problems, or the food you eat cause your breath to not be as fresh. Try switching your mouthwash if it has alcohol in it, and use a tongue scraper; if this doesn’t work, it might be from the food you’re eating and a change in diet might do the trick. Best of luck to you!
Chew gum or buy those Listerine strips that dissolve on your tongue. You don’t mention brushing your tongue. If you don’t, you should be brushing as far back as possible. Many of the bad breath causing germs are there.
No ones breath smells good all the time no matter how good your home care is. Foods can cause bad breath coming from the stomach. Also try using a tongue scraper. The tongue has the most bacteria and grooves in it that catch and harbor food.
