How do you make up for years of not taking care of your mouth?

I wouldnt brush my teeth when i was little, it took for my teeth & breath to get bad for to realise how stupid i was, now i know my Dentist can fix my teeth, but what can i do about my breath its so bad that listerine wont even cure it, i get tired of people asking what im doing as i have my hand over my mouth if im in a situation where i have speak right next to there face
