My 10 year old son has a real bad breathing problem at night when he sleeps. He breathes through his mouth because it sounds like he has an obstruction in his nose. I know my oldest had polyps removed for the same reason. Is there anything over the counter besides nose strips or spray to help this or is surgery my only option. It is really bad. He sometimes stops breathing for a second and then opens his mouth to breath. It sounds really uncomfortable and I know he does not get a good night sleep. I cant even stand it when I have a cold and have to breath through my mouth but he does this every night. I wish there was a home remedy I could try instead of dosing him with medication,. Thanks.

Sounds like sleep apnea to me. It is serious as the brain does not get enough oxygen and his body does not get a good nights sleep. You should have his doctor refer him to a ENT doctor for a sleep study. There is a machine called a CPAP that he will have to get use to using each night, but it will trully help. I at first did not like the machine, so had surgury to repair. Was told before hand that the surgury was 50/50 at best. It did not work for me and I’m back to the CPAP and have been for several years now.
I had the same problem, which decongestion sprays only make worse after a while. If you think it is polyps you could try beclomethasone spray or vistamethasone drops – which worked for me – try asking a pharmacist.
