I am 42 year old and when I was a teenager started having a bad taste in my mouth while sleeping. In the beginning, just swallowing my saliva would clear my mouth, but with time that taste became worse and worse. As years went by, I had to spit it out, then years later, wash my mouth with water, and nowadays I can’t go back to sleep if I don’t wash it with a mouthwash or toothpaste.
These symptoms worsened over the last 20 years and are constant. There was a time that in the middle of my dream I would try to spit it out, so bad it tasted. Since our muscles don’t move voluntarily during sleep, my saliva would run out of my mouth until I woke up. Nowadays my body worked it out and I wake up after some hours of sleep so I can wash my mouth. That happens at least three times every night.
That doesn’t happen only when I’m sleeping. It only gets worse at that time because my mouth is at rest.
During the day I feel the same. Too.
Now, I’m experiencing a putrid smell in my breath as the problem is worsening.
I’ve been to several doctors and they did every check they could think of, but no exam resulted abnormal.
Does anyone have this kind of symptom or know how to cure this?
I’m going to cross out some possibilities I think someone would answer:
- My teeth are fine; I brush them regularly (including my tongue). The doctors checked my gum and the kind of bacteria I have in my mouth. They are normal.
- The kind of food probably is not the problem as I’ve eaten different kinds of food and changed my habits during these more than 20 years.
- I don’t drink, smoke or take any kind of medicine.

Have you had a recent dental exam? One of your teeth may be rotten. Otherwise, use mouthwash few times a day.
if you get a sour or bitter taste in your mouth when you lie down for a few hours, especially if you have a mild sore throat or burning in your throat, it might be heartburn. the stomach acid is coming up your esophagus into your mouth.
try propping the head of your bed up with bricks so that you sleep at a slant and it’s harder for the stomach acid to rise up. or try taking antacids.
In all those years you have not heard that the primary cause of bad breath (and those bad tastes) come from bacteria that grow on the top of your tongue, especially the back one-third of your tongue.
