| Bad breath (known as Halitosis; from the Latin “halitus”, meaning,“breath”, and the Greek, “—osis”, meaning “an abnormal condition”.) is a very ancient human problem. For example: • A resin taken from the Pistacia lentiscus tree has been chewed for several thousand years around the Mediterranean as a bad breath remedy – in fact, it was probably the original chewing-gum. • Hippocrates, known as the ‘Father of Medicine’, prescribed a mouthwash made from dill seeds to his ancient Greek patients. • Even the Jewish Talmud contains a number of mouthwash recipes! But it’s also a very modern human problem too: Depending on whose figures you accept, between 80-90% of the general population suffer from it, in varying intensities. And, if all that wasn’t bad enough, it’s also responsible for the creation of a giant industry that sucks billions of dollars from our pockets every year. The figures involved are astonishing: Americans spend nearly $2 billion per annum just on toothpaste; nearly $1 billion on mouthwashes and rinses; another $1 billion on toothbrushes and dental floss; and more than $625,000,000 on breathfreshener alone. That totals nearly $5 billion dollars each and every year! |
